THE Alton Barnes white horse lies on a hill known as Old Adam, above the Vale of Pewsey, one mile north of the village of Alton Barnes.

Some believe it is a copy of the Cherhill White Horse. Cut in 1812, it was commissioned by Robert Pile of Manor Farm in Alton Barnes, the same man responsible for the first horse at Pewsey.

He hired a painter, John Thorne to design the horse but having been paid, Mr Thorne disappeared before finishing the work. Mr Pile engaged others to finish the work and Mr Thorne was later hanged for a variety of crimes.
