THERE was once an older horse at Pewsey, which was cut in 1785, but it fell into disrepair and disappeared. A new horse was created very close to the site of the old one, located on Pewsey Hill, looking out at the Alton Barnes horse. It was created by George Marples, an authority on hill figures, to celebrate the coronation of George VI. He had originally designed it with the date of the coronation, but this has now disappeared. The design was cut by volunteers from Pewsey Fire Brigade in 1937. |
