ARTISTS seeking county council support for an innovative project celebrating the dawn of the 21st Century have been told: Come back in three years' time. Members of Wiltshire County Council's policy and resources committee agreed yesterday that they did not yet wish to become financially involved with a new white horse project for the county. Two artists from Stroud had asked the council to help with the £80,000 cost of carving a new horse on Wiltshire downland - possibly at Liddington. Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors felt there should be a positive response to proposals from the artists, Lo Cole and Steve Morgan. The duo produced a 16-page report suggesting that the commemorative horse could be produced to celebrate the millennium in the year 2000. But the suggestion met with a cool response from Coun. John Foley (Lab, Stratton). 'I have never heard so much nonsense,' he commented, and suggested some other form of commemoration might be considered to mark local government reorganisation. Coun. Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott) said a new white horse would be quite a landmark for Wiltshire and would be seen from the M4 by motorists as an identifiable symbol of the county. Coun. Alan Winmill (Con, Roughmoor) reminded members that Wiltshire already had eight white horse monuments. He said any free money should be used to restore another three horses which had fallen into disrepair. It was agreed, however, that the two artists should be thanked for their report, offered tacit support and told that the matter would be reviewed nearer the end of this century - possibly in 1997.
