BARBED wire and barriers could be a taste of things to come this summer for Avebury residents and tourists.

The stone circle village is preparing for siege by peace protesters.

Villagers have been warned by police to report anyone setting up illegal camp.

This week the village was invaded by women proclaiming to be peace protesters. About 50 women, some with babies in arms, kept all-night vigil on Silbury Hill.

Yesterday they intended to follow the ancient Ridgeway route to Salisbury Plain to protest, they said, at military occupation.

One of the women who would only give her name as Carole, said the vigil was also to mark the ancient ceremony of Beltane, the spring equivalent of Hallowe'en, falling on the eve of Mayday. Last August, women invaded the village for another festival falling on one of the old quarter days, Lammas, or the Feast of the First Fruits. Farmers, at the request of police, blocked some of the ancient tracks with machinery.

Farm machines were used again on Tuesday to block the Green Street public right of way from Avebury to the Ridgeway.

Other likely camping spots were blocked with farm implements, and the public car park and viewing area for Silbury Hill was cordoned off with coils of barbed wire.

Avebury residents fear they will suffer from the Stonehenge free festival being banned this summer. Parish council chairman Miss Betty Hunter said: "If these people are turned away from Stonehenge they will obviously look for somewhere else."
