First published on July 3, 2000 ARCHAEOLOGISTS are to insert a digital camera in an open shaft on Silbury Hill in an effort to discover its true identity. Together they hope to learn why the 50ft deep cavity was dug on the summit of the hill which is Europe's biggest man-made monument. The probe by English Heritage and the National Trust, which look after the site, comes in the wake of an incident two weeks ago in which a man fell down the shaft. Firefighters from Westlea and Marlborough managed to free him by putting a ladder down and getting him to climb out. Archaeologists believe the shaft was sunk into the core of the 130ft high mound by miners employed by the Duke of Northumberland in 1776 because he wanted to see if the hill was a tomb or if there was any treasure hidden inside it. Following an inspection by structural engineers a team of builders began the massive task of carrying scaffolding to the summit of the hill to erect a corrugated steel cover over the cavity.
