First published June 4, 1993 GUIDED tours around Avebury are planned under a new scheme to take over the world-famous site. The National Trust wants to take over the management of the area from the Government agency English Heritage. English Heritage is interested in getting other organisations to look after some of the country's heritage sites and the National Trust owns most of the land at Avebury. English Heritage has asked local councils across the country to look into plans to transfer the management of such sites to the NT or private owners. It looks as if Avebury could be a pioneer. David Riddle, regional land agent for the NT's Wessex region, said: "We would like to make the site much more user-friendly, and have guided walks from Avebury to Silbury Hill to give visitors a wider understanding of the importance of the site." English Heritage receives £90.2 million each year in Government grants to manage 350 ancient and beautiful sites across the country. Mr Riddle said: "We are very concerned that we receive some kind of financial help from English Heritage for taking over the site, otherwise we would think twice about taking on such a big responsibility." He stressed that there were no plans to charge visitors to look around Avebury. "People live within the stone circle; there is even a pub. It would be totally impractical to charge people." At a meeting of Kennet District Council's planning committee, councillors applauded the move to transfer management to the National Trust. John Lee, director of planning, said: "Both Kenne t District Council and Avebury Parish Council agree that it would be far simpler to deal with one body." Coun Christopher Humphries (Aldbourne) said: "I think it's a good idea to let the National Trust take over. English Heritage manages Stonehenge and you have to pay through the nose there." The National Trust already owns the stone circle at Avebury, the restored section of the stone avenue, Windmill Hill and the building which houses Avebury Museum, plus 1,400 acres of land around the site.
