MOON maidens were leaving prehistoric Silbury Hill, near Avebury, today after completing their controversial midnight ceremony last night.

But police said the women, who annually cavort naked, were forced to cover up this year.

Earlier more than 100 women who descended on the ancient mound at the weekend said the ceremony would be called off because of the threat of an army of peeping Toms.

"There were no reported incidents," said a Marlborough police spokesman today. "We were only paying casual attention to it."

One Avebury villager confirmed: "They are all packing their bags today, They have performed their rites and had a nice time."

Last year the pagan festival was disrupted when 150 unwanted spectators turned up to see the women (who travel from all corners of the country to take part).

But manager of Avebury's Great Barn, Wendy Gallop, today slammed the ritual.

"It's like a fun circus act. It's only been happening in the last four or five years."

The folk lore expert said there was no historical basis for the moon worship stunt.

The cult Moon Maiden group dance and sing for several hours on Silbury Hill under a full moon.
