VISITORS will no longer be able to clamber over one of Wiltshire's most famous landmarks, Silbury Hill, when new works are completed.

A new parking and viewing area is already under construction on the site of a former filling station near Europe's largest man-made hill alongside the A4 between Marlborough and Calne.

When it is completed, Wiltshire County Council's northern panel agreed an order would be made closing the existing layby on the A4 right by the monument to prevent access to the hill and extending the No Waiting order on the main road.

The proposal is to be advertised and any objections would be considered by the panel.

Members heard that the Environment Department was providing the parking and viewing area at the old filling station site. The object was to prevent erosion of the monument by casual visitors climbing and walking over the site. The department was paying the cost of closing the layby.
