Letter: WE enjoyed your July 10 article on 'croppies' Bas and Dave. Crop circles fascinate many of us but keen though we are we've not yet managed to train a platoon of hedgehogs to run round in any kind of logical formation.

Sorry, but hedgehogs as a cause are impossible. There are plenty of litters of hoglets (baby hedgehogs) about and their mothers will be leading them out in the evening to teach them how to forage. If you leave a little dish of tinned, meat-based pet food and a tip-over-proof bowl of water in the garden you may see a mother hedgehog leading her hoglets in solemn procession towards their dinner. They are an enchanting sight and well worth staying up to watch. For more information about BHPS and a free copy of our Hogalogue send an A5 stamped, self-addressed envelope to the address below.

Many of your readers will know of the existence of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Others may be interested in its aims. n To encourage and give advice to the public about the care of hedgehogs, particularly when injured, sick, orphaned, treated cruelly or in any danger. n To encourage the younger generation to value and respect our natural wildlife and, by supplying information and giving lectures, to foster their interest in hedgehogs. n To fund serious research into the behavioural habits of hedgehogs and to ascertain the best methods of assisting their survival.

Anyone who wishes to learn more about the Society and its activities should send a stamped addressed envelope to the address below:
