First published on September 4, 2000 WILTSHIRE'S crop circles can now be studied in a special course at Swindon College. For £19, people can be guided through what is known about crop formations and explore ideas about their origins with an astro-physicist. The one-day course in November, which lasts for seven hours, is one of a number on 'alternative' subjects offered by the college in its new brochure. Others that can be studied include Confidence Building, Sacred landscapes, Tarot Cards - An Introduction, and Travelling Solo, a course for people thinking of travelling alone. The college prides itself on providing tuition in a huge range of subjects from languages and computing to cookery and gardening. But the crop circles course is one of the more diverse on offer and looks set to prove very popular. Enormous interest has been generated by the strange shapes taken by the circles which regularly appear around Swindon. They have spring up near Silbury Hill, Windmill Hill and Alton Barnes in the last year and more than 50 circles ' of all shapes, sizes and designs ' were recorded in 1999. Many of those created in Wiltshire were within a 15-mile radius of Avebury. Most people now believe the cruder shapes are man-made. But what remains bewildering is how many of the more intricate designs can be created so perfectly in the dead of night. There are many theories as to how and why they appear - ranging from alien activity and ancient earth energies to magnetic fields and the weather. Conferences organised in the county to discuss the phenomenon attract hundreds of people and the actress Goldie Hawn came to Wiltshire in the summer in search of the circles. The 54-year-old, famous for her roles in films, such as Private Benjamin, took to the sky with a party of fellow Americans in July to view spectacular formations at Avebury. But not everyone shares the Hollywood star's enthusiasm - farmers who have discovered crop circles on their land say they cause untold damage to their crops and resent sightseers trampling through their land.
