First published on September 4, 1991 A FARMER has confessed to helping create one of the mysterious Wiltshire corn circles which have baffled experts. Organic farmer Martin Pitt of Levetts Farm, Clench Common near Marlborough, joined forces with a television company to produce the circle on his land and hoax the experts. "I have always thought all corn circles were a hoax, so I wanted to see if it was easy to create one," said Mr Pitt. His opportunity came when the makers of the Channel Four programme Equinox asked if they could rent some of his land and buy his corn crop. "They arranged for people who had never built a corn circle before to come along in the dead of night and build a simple circle," said Mr Pitt. Five men calling themselves the Wessex Sceptics created the formation of one large circle and three smaller ones in just one and a half hours using a plastic garden roller, water and bits of card strapped to their feet, explained Mr Pitt. The circle design had been copied from a book and it completely fooled the experts. "They were all crowing about how wonderful it was," said Mr Pitt. One expert, Dr Terence Meaden, declared it to be a true formation; a spiritualist flew over from France and had to be pulled out of the circle because she claimed to be in pain from its energy source; dowser's rods apparently flew through 360 degrees when they found the core of the circles. "It's all hocus pocus. It really is," said Mr Pitt. He said he had been convinced that the circles were man-made and had set out to prove his point.
