THE answer to the riddle of crop circles could be just a few years away, enthusiasts believe. A total of 55 formations , many of them extremely intricate, were recorded in Wiltshire's corn fields this summer.

"Each year it is increasing in intensity," said Francine Blake, a leading member of the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group.

"The formations are without doubt getting more complex each summer. Because this is happening we assume it will be even more so next year."

"We cannot seem to imagine what it will be like because it always goes beyond what we thought possible." "But I do believe we are getting closer to perceiving where they come from and what their message is. It is gradually leading us towards the answer," she said.

At the moment no one has been able to produce any evidence of how the formations are made. But people like Francine Blake, who take the phenomena seriously, rule out hoaxes, claiming for formations are too complex to be manmade.

"Unfortunately all many people see are stories in the media claiming they are man-made and they tend to believe this," she said.

Francine travels the country lecturing on crop circles and tells how during a recent helicopter flight over a complex formation near Avebury her camera played up and was found to have corroded inside. This year more than 130 formations were recorded nationwide and Francine believes they contain some form of energy force.

She said: "We think we are seeing something truly amazing. There are aspects that are not known at the moment."

"It is so complex but we are delving into it."

The Wiltshire Group has 350 members made up of enthusiasts from all over the world.
