A MAN is facing a criminal damage charge over the alleged making of a crop circle during the summer.

A CROP circle shaped like an alien has appeared on the Cherhill Downs, just as many of the shapes across the Wiltshire landscape are disappearing with the harvest. But the spectacular design is not a signal from another world, it is an advertising stunt by an Internet company.

The circle is 235 feet long and about 55 feet wide and sits below the white horse, where it can be seen from the A4.

Rob Peters, 34, of south London, studies crop circles and took a closer inspection at the latest one after spotting it from a helicopter on August 27, 2000.

He walked inside the circle and said he was impressed with what he saw. "It's as big as any I've come across so far this summer," said Mr Peters. "To me it looked like an alien and is extremely well made and very big."

Francine Blake, of the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group, said she had been told of the circle but had been unable to see it. "Because of the weather I haven't seen it," said Ms Blake. "I heard it looked like a dragon, I hope to see it soon." The 20 acre field which the circle sits in is part of Bell Farm, owned by Andrew Ainslie. "I first heard about it on Saturday morning so I guess it must have appeared on Friday," said Mr Ainslie, who added that the circle was the first he had encountered on his land this summer.

"To me it looks like a cartoon character, with a large head and a small body. I suppose some people may compare it to an alien, I guess it depends on your point of view." Mr Ainslie, who intends harvesting the field at the end of the week, said he was sure how it came about. "It's definitely man-made, I have no doubts about that."

Internet company Thomson Intermedia said it created the crop design to publicise the launch of its website. The formation depicts a character who will appear in a forthcoming shopping website the company is launching.

"We wanted to highlight the need for research in to other life forms, but also to have a bit of fun," said Tanya Rawlinson, of Thomson Intermedia, based in London.

Ms Rawlinson said the circle was created last Friday night.
