Spiritual elder flies in to probe ancient mysteries

A MEXICAN spiritual elder and teacher (revered worldwide as an expert on the culture and tradition of ancient Indian peplles) has been in the Pewsey Vale to try and un ravel the mysteries surrounding the ancient stones at Avebury and the increasing complex corn circles.

Francisco Jimenez Sanchez (or Tlakaelel) has helped archaeologists in America in the interpretation of petroglyphs and has lectured on ancient civilisations. But it was his meeting with Colin Andrews, who heads a circles phenomenon research centre, which inspired the 73-year-old to travel 6,000 miles to Wiltshire. He was shown photographs of a scorpion figure which appeared in the corn near Avebury. He recognised the symbol and believes that such patterns could be linked to other symbols throughout the world.

At the weekend hundreds crowded into the Coronation Hall at Alton Barnes to hear his views on the symbolism of the circles and the significance of Stonehenge and Avebury. He said he believed the circles could hold messages and there would be links with other patterns found in other parts of the world.

But the elder had no plans to examine the circles for himself. Instead he paid a number of visits to Avebury and conducted a service within the stones. "He was very moved by what he experienced," said his hostess Lin Gladwin. "He felt the time had come for him to come forward. It was a great privilege that someone of his knowledge and stature took the trouble to come in a quest to find out more of what is happening. "He felt the area had great significance in bringing people together and that there could be links with other ancient sites." Tlakaelel, who represented the indigenous world of Latin America at the United Nations, traces his lineage back to the ancient Poet King and was trained in the ancient Mexican Toltec culture stretching back 48,000 years.
