First published August 8, 1996 A SPECTACULAR formation of crop circles has appeared in a Wiltshire field which is already attracting researchers from all over the world. Crop circle watchers are amazed at the appearance of a giant formation of three interlinked centipede shapes in a field at Windmill Hill, near Avebury. The 1,000 foot long formation, made up of 194 circles, is the most complex pattern ever seen in Britain. The three centipede shapes are even more stunning than a similar pattern which astounded circle watchers in a field hear Stonehenge a few weeks ago. Crop circle researcher Stephen Alexander, who took the aerial picture, said it mysteriously appeared overnight earlier this week. "It's the most spectacular pattern I have ever seen in the 15 years I have been studying the circles," he said. Scores of international watchers from Australia, Canada, America and even Mexico have been making their way to Julian Hibberd's Westbrook Farm for a glimpse of the latest formation. Crop circle scientist Colin Andrews said: "This latest formation is extremely spectacular. The Stonehenge shape and this latest one has brought the circle season to a great climax after a poor year of reports in this country." Mr Andrews said the shape is one of the most interesting he has seen during his 13 years of research, building up a database of 4,500 formations. Twin circles, described as among the most beautiful ever seen, have also mysteriously appeared on a hillside near Swindon. Each of the Badbury circles, located near Junction 15 of the M4 motorway, measure several hundred metres in circumference and contain a crescent and a smaller circle. Experts say they are baffled by their meaning and by the way the wheat has been flattened into incredible patterns. "They are just exquisite, it is as though the wheat has been exploded downward," said Michael Glickman, who has been studying the weird circles for the last seven years. "These two are among the prettiest I have ever seen. They are just beautifully made, beautifully laid and beautifully swirled," he said. Back to 1996 index |
