THE earth's magnetic force lies behind the mystery of Wiltshire's crop circles, a leading scientist claims.

The formation of the elaborate geometric circles in fields around Swindon has baffled scientists and new-age theorists for years, with some even speculating they are the creation of aliens.

But after 11 years of research funded by the Rockafeller Institute, Colin Andrews says the phenomena are simply formed by the earth's magnetic field.

The former local government engineer believes the field's electric current simply electrocutes crops, flatening them into the distinctive circular patterns.

He suggests that measuring the magnetism surrounding the circles shows that the pattern of the magnetic field exactly matches the shape of the crop circle.

Mr Andrews said his theory, believed to be the first based on scientific fact, was a "significant breakthrough." He said he hired private detectives to track hoaxers Ð which eliminated about 80 per cent of crop circles as man-made creations.

"The other 20 per cent, though, remain quite another thing and I think the earth's magnetic field is directly involved," he said.

"What I am working with is simply the facts. We are measuring a difference in the magnetic field, I think we have a really significant breakthrough here." "Crop art should now be seen for what it is - a problem that is occurring in Wiltshire and Hampshire in the farming community. It should be recognised and accepted that these are man-made." "But these very simple circles that are appearing throughout the world is really where the mystery still remains."

Mr Andrew's research is set to be published in the autumn.
