A PUB landlady claims she has seen a UFO which she believes is connected with the corn circles.

Jan Hallett, 39, and her husband Geoff, 41, of The Crown at Bishops Cannings, were returning from Marlborough by taxi at 10.30pm on Monday along the A361 near Beckhampton when Mrs Hallett saw a weirdly glowing disc near the gallops at West Down. And her mysterious sighting coincides with the visit of self-proclaimed prophet David Icke to the area, who was seen feeling the force of the corn circles near Alton Barnes on Monday night.

Mrs Hallett estimates the object was about two feet in diameter, two inches thick and a foot off the ground. The disc disappeared as the taxi approached. She said: "I thought, My God, what was it?" Mr Hallett was asleep and missed the sight and the taxi driver was concentrating on the road.

The Halletts believe the sighting has a connection with corn circles, though a search the next day revealed no new circles. But crop circle expert Dr Terence Meaden believes Mrs Hallett may have seen the plasma, an unusual and volatile formation of matter, that he believes causes crop circles. "The absence of a circle does not dismiss her evidence," he says. And he believes the disc was nearer and larger than Mrs Hallett thought, probably 100 yards away and one or two metres in diameter. Its colour fits what he knows about plasma and its description fits that of similar sightings of circles in the sky near Devizes.

It could also have been an Army flare descending by parachute after an exercise, he said. Meanwhile, Mr Icke was venturing forth on to mysterious new formations at Stratton's Farm, Alton Barnes. "He was running round one of the circles," said David Carson, brother of the farm's manager. "It is a week to the day that one appeared. Perhaps he felt it was a special time to be there."
