AS THE corn circles are harvested yet another theory has been forwarded to explain their appearance.

Engineering inspector Phillip Ockwell claims that falling underground water supplies suck the corn flat by the same process as bathwater swirls down the plughole. "It's turbine effect of the water dropping," said the 41-year-old from Meysey Hampton, near Cirencester. The corn formations at Beckhampton, near Marlborough have been harvested, and farmer Steve Horton's girlfriend is glad. "It's good news as far as we are concerned because it's private property and we don't want people wandering over our fields," said Susan Molesworth.

Although charging visitors £1 to see the shapes, which included a triangle, she said no fortunes had been made. The couple gave £100 of takings to the Bishops Cannings church. Farmer Tim Carson, of Alton Barnes, plans to cut the corn in his field today. "I can't really leave them any longer. They have become so tatty," he said.

In the 33 days since the weird formations appeared at Stratton's Farm, 600 T-shirts, 250 pictures, and several hundred key-rings have been sold to the visitors who each paid £1 to enter the field. Takings from the souvenirs is more than £5,000, without counting the admission price receipts. Money will be donated to the Family Holiday Association and the Alton Barnes village hall fund.
