First published on July 15,1999 FARMER Tim Carson says he has lost hundreds of pounds this year because of crop circles appearing on his land. Mr Carson estimates the circles appearing overnight in three of his fields at Old Manor Farm, Alton Barnes, have cost him at least £500. He said: 'Although they don't cause a huge amount of damage, they are a real nuisance. People are fascinated by them and love to traipse down into the fields to take a closer look. 'But I don't think they realise how difficult it is to then try and pick up the corn when we come to harvest or cut it.' More than 30 designs have appeared in his fields since 1990. 'They always appear in either oil seed rape or winter barley fields from Easter through to the end of the summer,' said Mr Carson. The latest designs - a 700ft pictogram of different sized circles, nicknamed The Amalgamation, and a snake Ð have appeared in a 335-acre field below the Pewsey Downs and have attracted visits from crop circle enthusiasts. One of the viewers, Milly Chap, from Devizes, said: 'I find these designs absolutely fascinating. 'My belief is that these larger formations could not possibly have been formed by humans.' Mr Carson said he is keeping an open mind but does not believe the more intricate patterns can have been done by hoaxers. 'My fields are well protected because there are always people watching them to try and catch one in the act of being formed,' he said. Back to 1999 index |
