CROP circle enthusiasts have given a cautious welcome to the news that Hollywood may be making a block buster movie on the phenomena that has made Wiltshire the Mecca for spotters from all over the world. The word is that heart-throb Mel Gibson is being lined up to star in the as yet still secret film about the appearance of elaborate patterns in a Penysylvania corn field. If the film gets off the ground it is expected to be a major box office success in America where there is a big interest in crop circles. Every year hundreds of tourists from the States visit Wiltshire in the hope of seeing one of the increasingly intricate designs that appear in local fields every year. Lucy Pringle, a recognised authority and author on crop circles, was yesterday preparing to examine the first crop circle sighting of the year. She said: ÒI do not think it will do any harm if it brings the topic into the public domain without rubbishing it. ÒBut of course it will all really depend on how the subject is handled. If it is done sensibly I cannot see any problems. "I know from personal experience that there is a lot of interest in crop circles in America and my book - Crop Circles , the Greatest Mystery of Modern Times is selling well there. Francine Blake of the Wiltshire Crop Circle Group said if a film is made on the phenomena she hopes the film company will contact a local expert on the subject before the cameras start rolling. "If they are advised by Americans then I donÕt think it will be much good. The trouble is they tend to come here for two or three days and are then instant experts. I remember seeing a crop circle in the X-Files but it didn't look like the real thing." Mel Gibson, who starred in Brave Heart, Lethal Weapon and The Patriot, is the latest Hollywood celebrity to take an interest in crop circles. Last summer superstar film actress Goldie Hawn booked into a hotel near Swindon and then went off crop circle hunting. During her stay she took to the sky with a party of other Americans to view some spectacular patterns at Amesbury and in other fields around Swindon. Back to 2001 index |
