AMERICAN investigators trying to solve the mystery of Wiltshire's corn circles claim they have received a positive response from aliens from another world.

UFO-hunters Erik Beckjord and Joan Deneve, from Los Angeles, have spent the last two weeks in England on operation Magpie searching for clues. Three days ago they decided to try to provoke a reaction from space. In a meadow at Hackpen Hill, near Broad Hinton, they cut the words 'MAN', 'HOUSE', 'WATER' and 'LOVE' in 30 feet high capital letters in the grass. Erik, a business consultant, said: "Because we assumed the aliens probably wouldn't be able to speak English we put symbols beside each word , a stick man, a child's drawing of a house, three wavy lines to indicate water and a heart for love. Two days later we visited the Long Barrow at West Kennett and there, in a wheatfield opposite Silbury Hill, we saw what is obviously the response we have been looking for."

It was the symbol for the disabled such as you see outside public toilets. "To us that obviously means that they are trying to tell us that man is impaired, in trouble or handicapped." The aliens appear to be reading our symbols and attempting to get some sort of message across. "It's beginning, we think."

Joan, a nursing supervisor at the Good Samaritan Hospital in LA, said: "We never expected it. It was frightening in a way, shocking in fact." Unfortunately not many people saw the response, which was pretty positive, because as soon as we have taken pictures the farmer cut the wheatfield with his combine harvester. "If this was a hoax then I take my hat off to whoever did it. It was brilliantly done and I'm sure it was genuine." Erik and Joan have ended Operation Magpie for this year and are spending a few days in London before returning home.
