First published on April 18, 1997 Russian to aid crop mystery AN intriguing mystery surrounding Swindon could be investigated with help from a former Soviet leader. Mikhail Gorbachev is being asked to back a high-tech satellite probe to try and shed some light on the yearly riddle of crop circles. Circles Phenomenon Research International, with offices in Branford, Connecticut, USA, believes Mr Gorbachev's contacts in Moscow could help stimulate interest and unlock cash for a cutting edge study. Head of CPRI Colin Andrews said: "I am in discussion with associates of Mikhail Gorbachev and the Lawrence Rockefeller Foundation in New York to secure funding for research using GPS (the geo-positioning system that uses satellites). We hope GPS will help speed up the work and discover the reason crop circles fall in specific locations." Mr Andrews said many of last year's circles were hoaxes but a minority defied explanation. These included last July's 900ft by 500ft pattern in a wheat field near Stonehenge which contained plants containing five times more pesticide that plants in the remainder of the field, and grain which germinated more quickly than normal. "Similar findings have been made in plants taken from a very large complex near Avebury and this is consistent with results from other parts of the world," said Colin. Crop circle expert Busty Taylor, director at the Andover based Centre for Crop Circle Studies, said there were 15 to 20 circles near Marlborough last year. "We've ruled nothing out," he said. "It could be earth energy or something beamed from above with some sort of heat source.". Back to 1997 index |
