Complex pattern impresses experts

EUROPE'S most spectacular crop circle has appeared yards from mystic Stonehenge. Experts are hailing the 900ft by 500ft circle as the most amazing crop circle yet. The formation, in a corn field belonging to farmer Philip Sandell, is made of a staggering 151 circles. Mr Sandell says it has caused £1,000 damage to his corn crop, but the enterprising farmer is charging people £2 to visit the shape, likened to a mathematical equation.

It was spotted by pilot Rob Taylor and his passenger, who said it was not there when they originally flew over the popular tourist site, but they noticed it when they flew over again 40 minutes later.

Crop circle expert Colin Andrews said: "It is the most startling pattern I have seen in 13 years of investigation. I'm amazed with the sheer complexity." Mr Andrews, 50, a former environmental officer with Andover-based Test Valley District Council, travels around the world investigating circles. He is based in Branford, Connecticut, but returned to his parents' home in Andover to investigate the formation. The author and scientist has a database of more than 4.500 formations worldwide over the last 13 years, but, he says, nothing to match this latest one.

Pictures of the Stonehenge circle taken by Mr Andrews are to feature in his new book Signs Have Arrived. Mr andrews says he does not believe aliens are responsible, but he adds: "I believe these formations are outside of man's creation. I think the earth is a living molecule and we already have evidence of a breakdown of life in the drastically changing climate."
