IS it a doodle left by beings from some civilisation capable of travelling lights years in the blink of an alien eye?

Is it the result of mysterious magnetic emanations from the superheated iron core of the Earth? Or is the work of some drunken people armed with graph paper, a felt-tipped pen and a plank of wood? Nobody can say for certain, but one thing we are sure about is that Wiltshire is Crop Circle Central. This design, one of the most ambitious and intricate ever seen, was spotted by reader Graham Pritchard at the foot of Milk Hill in Alton Barnes, Marlborough.

Formations have been observed elsewhere in the country and overseas, but spectacular ones have been seen annually on farmland in Wiltshire for at least a decade.

Sceptics claim the designs are entirely the work of human beings, and claim to be able to reproduce formations using nothing more mysterious than a piece of wood.

However, those who believe extraordinary forces are at work claim the man-made ones are noticeably shabby and imprecise, and that no human could create the more complex designs during a single night. There have also been documented cases in which electrical equipment has developed faults or ceased to work altogether in crop circles.
