WANTAGE has its own set of 'UFO rings' similar to those which appeared at Warminster last week.

But the general opinion is that they are the work of a copy-cat trying to hoax people after reading about the Wiltshire rings.

The rings appeared at the weekend in a field of wheat just below the Ridgeway from which the large ring and four 'satellites' can be seen clearly as dark circles in the green corn.

The large circle is about 50 feet across and the four small ones are each about 12ft across.

The mystery circles are about 40 yards into the field from the main road and a track which leads to the adjoining field in which the Old Berks Hunt Point to Point races are held every Easter.

David Castle, of Charlton Village, Wantage, was not available at his home some two miles away from his fields, but a farmer neighbour said "I reckon it's a big hoax but I hope the idea doesn't spread or we shall all be having crops knocked down for people's amusement. "If something had landed it isn't likely that all the corn would have been laid down in a near perfect circle."

Across the road on Froud's farm, areas of the hillside wheat have been laid down by the wind. Ted Froud, who has inspected the crop circles and believes them to be hoax attempts, said jokingly: "Maybe the rest of the armada of space ships landed in our field. I wouldn't be very happy at having wheat trampled as a joke and I don't expect David Castle will find it funny, either."

The circles have already attracted many visitors, who appear to have trodden down other tracks from the edge of the field to get a closer look and tracks link the largest circle with the four smaller ones.
