First published on July 19, 1988 MYSTERIOUS circles have appeared again in the crop in a Wiltshire cornfield. This time the strange conical markings are just a stone's throw from the Silbury Hill ancient monument. Five circles appeared overnight at the weekend, four smaller rings of flattened corn equally spaced round a larger circle. Similar shapes have been discovered in other parts of the country before but this is the first time that the circles have appeared on land owned by the Hues family from Beckhampton. Mrs Suzanne Hues said they had checked with the RAF because helicopters from the base at Odiham, Hampshire, carry out exercises in the area. "They say is has nothing to do with them," she said. "In any case, it would be impossible for aircraft to land or take off at the spot because of overhead power cables." To add to the mystery, some of the circles have been formed by the corn being flattened in an anti-clockwise direction. Others are clockwise. Farmers are keeping an open mind about the cause, said Mrs Hues. The obvious suggestion is freak winds. "You would think that if the weather was the cause then the edges of the circles could be ragged. But they are not. They are neat and precise." If the circles were made by pranksters there would have been paths made through the corn, but there are none, she said. While the Hues have no objection to the public looking at the circles from the nearby A4 road, or from lay-bys by the West Kennett long barrow, they have asked people to keep out of the field to avoid causing further damage.
