CHEEKY conmen are cashing in on the crop circle craze by charging sightseers to enter a farmer's field.

Martin Pitt, of Levetts Farm, Clench Common, near Marlborough, was furious to find 'ticket touts' had set up a stall alongside his field containing the latest arrival on the corn circle scene. "These ticket touts were asking people to pay £1 to go into my field," said Mr Pitt. "They pretended they owned it. It annoys me that someone is making money out of this."

He believes about 1,000 people have visited the circle since it appeared five days ago in a field alongside the A345 between the Clench Common and Manton junctions. "Everyone can get in for free but I would ask them to behave themselves please," said Mr Pitt. He suspects the formation is the work of tricksters. "I suspect it's a hoax. It's in such a prime position," he said. "I would love the experts to come and have a look at it."

He added that when the circle cropped up he looked for footprints or other signs to suggest it was the work of pranksters but could not find anything. The Marlborough area has experienced a bumper crop of corn circles this year, with more complex patterns than ever before. The Downs have been dubbed the circle centre of the world by expert Dr Terence Meaden.
