RINGS of flattened corn that have appeared in a field below the Westbury White Horse, have had Wiltshire theorists going round in circles.

The rings, which are within the Warminster UFO triangle, first appeared in 1980 on Geoff Cooper's farm by the Bratton to Westbury road. They have shown up at roughly the same time each year.

This time there are five of them, one large (45 feet in diameter) and four smaller, equally spaced around it, satellite fashion, without connecting paths. All have swathes of barley laid flat in a clockwise direction.

Another fainter set may be seen from the top of Clay Hill, Warminster.

A number of theories have been circulating, rutting deer (it drives them round in circles too, apparently), a lawn mower, hovering helicopters, and inevitably, landing pads for giant flying saucers.

Peter Meaden, meteorologist, of Bradford-on-Avon, who discovered them, believes they are caused by whirlwinds. He cannot explain why they are so perfectly formed, but they are basically caused by a spinning vortex.

This is not good enough for Ken Rogers, chairman of the British UFO Society, which keeps a vigil on Clay Hill each August 27.

"Several sightings have been made over the years," says Ken, "I am sure these circles mean something spectacular will happen this year."

August 27 will fall on a Saturday and I hope Ken will keep me informed. Too early of course for the rutting, but vortexes will still be spinning, and the lawn mowers mowing.
