First published on December 21, 2000 THE first man to be prosecuted for making crop circles has vowed to create a demonstration circle in the summer to disprove the theories of other researchers. Matthew Williams, 29, of Bishops Cannings, was fined £100 with £40 costs by Kennet Magistrates in November, after he admitted causing criminal damage to a field of wheat at West Overton in August. He says he and a friend made the seven-pointed star to disprove theories of crop circle researcher Professor Michael Glickman of Horton, that a design so complex could not be made by humans. ÒI have suffered from this," said Mr Williams, who works as a video editor. "I now have a criminal record for wanting to tell the truth and the police want to pin all the crop circles on me." He has claimed only two in the area Ð the West Overton star and a circle full of circles at Bishops Cannings in 1999. Mr Williams claims there are nine teams of crop circle makers operating in the area, although they are becoming less enthusiastic about their craft and some are giving up to move on to other things. "I confidently predict there will be fewer circles next summer," he said. Mr Williams said circles usually take three to four hours to complete in a night, five hours if it is large or complex. Computers play no part in the design or execution. The contents of any schoolchild's pencil case are sufficient technology to create one, he said. "We only ever use a compass and a ruler. On the ground we use a measuring tape with large numbers so we can see it in reduced light." Other high-tech tools include a plank of wood, bamboo stakes and lengths of rope. "We have made crop circles right under the noses of crop circle watchers sitting on the hill above us," said Mr Williams. "The sound of the crunching crop doesn't travel and if someone comes along, we leg it." Motives for making crop circles vary. Some are dedicated artists, others do it out of philosophical conviction and a small percentage do it for a lark, he said. But Mr Williams claims more altruistic motives. He said: "I am a researcher and I have tried to talk to the other investigators but their minds are closed. ÒWhen I first came to the area, I believed the circles couldn't have been man-made, but my investigations led me to a group of people who made them and the more I researched, the more convinced I became they were man-made. "I wanted to open lines of communication with the other researchers, but they don't want to listen to anything that might threaten their income or their belief system." He believes researchers are wrong in thinking the more complicated the formation, the less likely it is to be man-made. "I say the less complicated they are, the less likely they are to be man-made," he said. "Because of their stand, there is still confusion over how the simpler ones are made and more research needs to be done in that area." In an attempt to nail the myth of extraterrestrial involvement in crop circle making. Mr Williams aims to find a farmer prepared to allow him to create a formation in his field in the summer and invite the media to watch them do it. He said: "I have no intention of making any more illegal circles. Everything I do from now on will be stictly legal." But crop circle investigators have reacted with fury at Mr Williams' claim to have created the formation at Bishops Cannings in July last year. Prof Glickman said it was the most important and significant of all the crop circles appearing in the last ten years. He said: "The fact that Williams is claiming this, of all formations, shows what a liar he is. The seven-fold geometry of it, coupled with the total of 29 circles in the formation, is of enormous importance in numerology. He is untruthful, and is desperate for attention." Back to 2000 index |
