First published on March 23, 1989 SCIENTISTS trying to discover the truth behind the mysterious cornfield circles in Wiltshire are still as baffled as ever. Although some reports have appeared linking the symmetrical circles with the world's ozone layer crisis, research coordinator Colin Andrews says these are not wholly accurate. "They are still inexplicable. None of the scientists who are working on this can account for the circles appearing," says Mr Andrews. There are lots of possibilities and ideas put forward include that of the hole in the earth's ozone layer creating atmospheric conditions resulting in the circles. "But no-one that I know of is in a position to unquestionably link the ground markings with the ozone problem. It is one hypothesis that some journalists have seized on quite inaccurately." Mr Andrews, an electrical expert with Test Valley Borough Council, is leading research into the concentric circles which have appeared in cornfields in Hampshire and Wiltshire. They have become an unusual phenomenon on the Wiltshire Downs, last year appearing near the Silbury Hill monument, between Marlborough and Beckhampton, and also at Chilton Foliat near the Berkshire border. Landowners have been unable to explain the mystery and suggestions that whirlwinds, helicopters or alien landing craft are involved have all been considered. Although there is considerable military aerial activity in the Silbury Hill area any suggestion that helicopters made these particular circles was ruled out because of the presence of overhead electricity cables. Scientists, said Mr Andrews, are at a loss to explain why in some of the circles the laid-flat corn has grown back in a distinctive dartboard fashion with radial spokes. "Although this was not apparent at Silbury it was quite noticeable with some of the Hampshire rings," he says. When the crops have been harvested the rings are no longer detectable by the human eye but they can still be picked up by scientific apparatus, says the electrics specialist. "There is still something there which we can monitor but what it is I am not at liberty to reveal." In September Mr Andrews is travelling to a scientific conference in Tokyo to present a paper on the cornfield rings. "We have been working with the Japanese who are looking into the possible connection, and that is all it it, between the markings and the ozone layer problem." Back to 1989 index |
