published on August 23, 2001 ONE of the biggest and most elaborate crop patterns ever to appear in Wiltshire has ruined about £1,400 worth of corn for Stanton St Bernard farmer Brian Read. The massive complex, of swirls with more than 400 circles, which has appeared at the top of Milk Hill near Alton Barnes cannot be seen from any public roads. It was discovered last week by the pilot of a micro-light aircraft. The geometrical pattern is being regarded as the piece de resistance of the 2001 crop circle season and is possibly the combined work of two or three small teams who are understood to be responsible for the vast majority of the cornfield canvases. The pictogram is more than 800 feet across and covers about five hectares. Dozens of 'croppies' trekked along footpaths to view the phenomenon with almost as many taking to the sky in micro-lights, light aircraft and helicopters. Some researchers, like Reg Presley, formerly of The Trogs pop group, were keeping open minds about how the complex was created. He said: "If anybody made this then my hat goes off to them, when you think of the time in setting it out, let alone making it in almost total darkness." Back to 2001 index |
