First published on August 23, 1993 Crop aura fading to nothing CORN circles may be past their peak as a Wiltshire tourist attraction. Although dedicated circle watchers are still coming in search of the supernatural, tourist information centres say ordinary visitors seem to be losing interest. The number of people asking for information on them has been far lower than in previous years, and staff think documentaries de-bunking the phenomenon may be the reason. "I have certainly not heard anyone saying they have been inundated with queries," said Nan Jones, who works at the Chippenham Information Centre. "We have had a lot of interest in previous years but I think people may have seen the broadcasts about fake circles and interest has definitely tailed off. Speaking for myself, I have only had one inquiry this year." The Devizes centre reports the same fall-off in interest. "We have had a few people asking about corn circles, but not very many," said Brian Barter. Back to 1993 index |
