First published on April 25, 2000 CROP circle author Lucy Pringle is regarded as the leading authority on the phenomenon but admits she still has no definite proof as to what they are or how they are created. But she does urge people to keep an open mind on the subject and says that the answer to the mystery could be found at any time. Lucy is a regular visitor to the crop circles which appear every summer in Wiltshire corn fields and other parts of rural England. Indeed she claims that during a visit to one of the circles in 1990 an energy source completely cured a painful shoulder injury. It was after this remarkable and totally unexpected experience that she decided to channel her own energies into researching the physiological and psychological effects of crop circles. Recently she published her book, appropriately called Crop Circles - The Greatest Mystery of Modern Times. In terms of firing the imagination the mystery of crop circles ranks alongside UFOs the Loch Ness Monster and Big Cats. Literally thousands of crop circles have been logged throughout the last three hundred years. But as with Flying Saucers and Nessie no-one has been able to put forward undisputed scientific facts to prove what they are. Hoaxers have had a field day of course fuelling the arguments of cynics that crop circles are just a load of old rubbish. But it is hard to believe that anyone working during the hours of darkness could have produced some of the fascinating and intricate shapes that have been regularly appearing overnight in corn fields not far from Swindon. Indeed Lucy Pringle has collected statements from people who say they have seen crop circles formed within minutes and even seconds. One eye witness, Ray Barnes, says that in 1981 he saw a circle created at Westbury in just four seconds. He told the author how he say an invisible 'wave' travel through the top of a cereal crop at about 50mph and create a largish circle in a clockwise direction in approximately four seconds. Lucy Pringle's book takes a careful factual look at the circles and the effect they have had on humans, animals and in some instances mobile phones, cameras and even car engines. Circles have appeared in more than 40 countries and have not been confined to fields of corn. They have also been created in ice, sand, sunflowers, cabbage fields and even tree tops. Apart from the man made theory, other people believe the circles are the work of extra-terrestrial intelligence, freak weather conditions or even mystery magnetic and energy lines. Lucy Pringle has not ruled out any theory and says they could even be evidence of 'parallel worlds' or 'of some external intelligence.' Back to 2000 index |
