RESEARCHERS are today investigating an elaborate crop circle hoax committed in front of their cameras.

They believe a national newspaper was behind the appearance of a series of circles, some of which were found to contain ouija boards.

The shapes appeared in a field at Bratton, near Westbury, which is being monitored by a million pounds worth of cameras as part of the Operation Blackbird.

Colin Andrews of the Circles Phenomenon Research Group, said: "We have had a very elaborate hoax committee here in front of the surveillance equipment at about 3.30am. We have everything on film which is being analysed."

He said the shapes lacked symmetry and the corn had suffered damage which would not be expected from a genuine circle.

"We have even had ouija boards found in the centre of the circles. It smacks of a prank by the bottom end of the newspaper market."

Mr Andrews said it was believed a lot of money had been spent on the hoax which had included the use of aircraft.

"If half the amount of money was spent on research we might know what we are talking about," he said.

Earlier excited researchers were confident. "We had a formation appear last night and they are quality circles," said site manager Peeta Simmons.

Postcards and T-shirts depicting the corn circles at Alton Barnes, bear Marlborough, could soon be available.

Not content with charging £1 to see the eerie patterns at Stratton's Farm, secretary David Carson was today due to discuss producing 500 T-shirts.

He is hoping to use the circles photograph taken by Evening Advertiser chief photographer Malcolm Rouse for the postcards.
