ALIEN expert Jon Erik Beckjord was keeping a brave face on his attempts to break the silence between man and extra-terrestrial life.

Two days earlier he had carved a giant message across the Wiltshire countryside, hoping his initiative would bring about some exchange between himself and beings from beyond the stars. "I am not aware of any reply yet," he said, but he has not given up hope.

On Friday, the 44-year-old from California spent three and a half hours cutting out an image he believed would have the aliens ringing back. He was unwilling to reveal how much money the endeavour, which was carried out at a farm near Marlborough. "The farmer got fair compensation, and it was pounds rather than pennies," said Mr Beckjord, who a fortnight ago produced photographs he claimed to have taken of an alien in California. The exact location of the message is being kept secret, except to the aliens of course, in case anyone tampers with it.

Mr Beckjord is not alone in his mission. While he flew to America on business on Monday, boffins at a study centre were scanning the area for signs of reply. Barbara Davies, at a centre for crop circle studies in Cornwall, was awaiting developments. "We haven't had anything come in yet. We are still waiting. There is still a chance of something happening when the fields are unharvested," said Miss Davies. She said Mr Beckjord had rung from the airport, hoping the aliens had made that elusive call in his absence. "We are keeping a record of everything, something will turn up," said Miss Davies.

Mr Beckjord claims he has had replies to two previous messages though declined to say what they were. "If it succeeds a third time it would mean communication is improving. We may have to do something in winter," he said. He said if a recognisable pattern did appear Wiltshire would become a world centre for alien communication. Even the silence would carry a message he believed. "If there is no answer, maybe they are saying don't bother, don't ring us any more," said Mr Beckjord. Meanwhile the alien watchers are scanning the area, waiting and hoping. If you have anything to report, call the crop circle studies hotline on 0726 832367.
