THE Gazette and Herald has proof that some crop circles are man-made after the discovery of a cache of home-made equipment used for marking out and making the cornfield patterns.

First published on July 26, 2001 The discovery was made by the Gazette's Marlborough reporter Nigel Kerton a few yards from a pattern in the field opposite Silbury Hill.

Under a hedge he located two pieces of board with rope handles, a piece of aluminium tubing with a rope handle and a quiver holding white tipped marker canes.

Tracks led from the lay-by where the equipment was found, towards the huge pattern found on Tuesday morning and the equipment has now been given to police. Retired farmer Tom Windel, 81, had been asked by farmer David Hues to charge tourists £1 each to go into the crop formation.

He was amazed at the find and said: ÒWe have known all along they were man-made, the results of mischief-makers and thereÕs the proof.

The reporter said: "No-one was more surprised than me. I have seen similar equipment demonstrated on television by people who claimed they were circle makers so I recognised it immediately." Police said anyone making crop patterns without the landownerÕs permission was guilty of criminal damage. Last year Matthew Williams, 29, of Bishops Cannings was fined £100 with £40 costs when he admitted making a star desigh in a field at West Overton.

Williams said he had made it to prove academics were conning people the circles were an inexplicable phenomenon.
