First published on July 26, 1990 Stephen Webb meets a man with yet another theory to help explain the baffling mystery of Wiltshire's flattened corn circles. THE power and intelligence of Mother Nature, that is the answer to the great corn circle mystery, according to one man researching the phenomenon. Dowser Dennis Wheatley, who lives at Blunsdon, has joined the hordes of sightseers and scientists at Stratton's Farm in Alton Barnes, near Marlborough, where probably the most spectacular and intriguing corn circles have appeared so far. Dowsers are people who detect invisible energies in the Earth using pendulums and divining rods. That's why you'll often see Dennis, armed with such instruments, tracking ley lines about the countryside. Being a student of mysterious phenomena, Dennis has long been interested in the corn circles. The Alton Barnes pattern, which he calls a pictogram was too good to resist. And his conclusion? Forget UFOs, forget whirlwinds, a spiritual force is the cause of the mystery. "I dowsed the Alton Barnes pictogram four days after its first appearance, said 61-year-old Dennis. I was told that when another dowser had worked the site on the day the circles formed, his rods had reacted wildly within the circles. I found the circles were dead on energy terms, except at the centres when the rods crossed positively. Whatever energy had been present at the inception had vanished except from the centre." However, around the entire perimeter of the pictogram the rods crossed indicating an energy band. The energy rose to a height above ground of 7 ft 6 ins. "Another dowser, who was using a pendulum, queried what I was doing and checked it out. His pendulum swung anti-clockwise at a steady rate, indicating that the energy was rising to the 7 ft 6 ins level and was negative, or female, in nature." Then Dennis asked the circles questions. He simply asked a question and the movement of the divining rods gave a Yes or No answer. He first asked if the circles were a hoax and was told No. He got the same answer when asked if they were produced by humans, UFOs, animals or a virus. He then turned to natural phenomena and ascertained whirlwinds, the Earth's magnetic or gravitational fields, chemical reactions or effects of the sun, moon and planets were not responsible for the circles. Dennis was flummoxed: "I walked again around the inside of the pictogram and marvelled at its geometry and precision. To engineer something such as this, in one night, would have been a feat for a team of people who would have left evidence of crop damage outside the pictogram. "Whatever created the enigmatic crop sculpture was obviously intelligent. But what was it? I had eliminated all known forms of life, many natural causes, and was at an impasse." Then Dennis considered whether the circles were spiritual in nature. He asked the question and the rods sapped into a crossed position, Yes. But it was still all very vague, so Dennis searched his brain for his knowledge of nature and spiritualism and recalled reading about a hierarchy of nature, of nature spirits, elementals and landscape angels. Going back to his question and answer routine, he discovered the corn circles were created by a spirit known as a Deva. "By further dowsing questions I got no inkling of any prophetic warning, merely an answer indicating we should be aware of Mother Nature, of her power and intelligence. Nothing more than that... this was the pictogram's message." Back to 1990 index |
