HOAXERS are turning the crop circle centre in Wiltshire into a 'circus' says one researcher.

Dr Terence Meaden said pranksters were responsible for several patterns which have appeared in the Marlborough area this summer. The problem is so bad that the race is on to find concrete evidence to bring the first prosecution against a hoaxer for crop damage. Circle groups, angry that hoaxers are distracting attention from what they see as a natural phenomenon, are urging anyone with information about hoaxing to notify the police.

Many of this year's circles are elaborate pictograms, including a snail-shaped pattern at Tim Carson's now famous Stratton's Farm at Alton Barnes. Mr Carson believes the snail is 'genuine' and is charging visitors £1 to look at it. "If I found out circles had been hoaxed on land of mine I would want to see whoever did it prosecuted for causing criminal damage," he said. "Up to now the general feeling among the experts is what we have had this year is genuine."

Dr Meaden advised people interested in the subject to look outside Wiltshire for a so-called genuine circle because he believes hoaxing is so rife here. "It has become almost a circus around Alton Barnes," said Dr Meaden. "It is the target area. Every year there have been more and more fakes. There are probably only a few genuine ones each year." Dr Meaden believes the circles are caused by mini-whirlwinds.

George Wingfield of the Centre of Crop Circle Studies, challenged Dr Meaden to provide evidence of hoaxing, believing many of this year's circles are genuine. "Well over 100 circles have appeared this year. Some are hoaxes, but it's absurd to say that they all are," he said.
