First published on June 29, 1996 New riddle of corn circles CORN circles have appeared again in Wiltshire, and they are bigger and more complex than before. Researchers are flocking to Stratton's Farm at Alton Barnes, near Marlborough, where 89 circles are linked in a giant double helix pattern at least 48 feet long. And farmers Tim and Polly Carson are convinced the mysterious configuration is not the work of a practical joker. "Something very serious is going on," said Mrs Carson. "There were only about three and a half hours when this could have happened." The circles appeared in the early hours of Monday morning. A joker, she added, would not have had time (even if he had the ability) to fake them. Circles have appeared in the Carsons' fields every summer since 1990. This time they are in East Field, in which there are 200 acres of barley. They cannot be seen easily from the road. "We don't really have any theories about how they are made or who makes them," she said. "But I do know people don't do it. If they were the work of a trickster they would have been placed where they can be properly seen." When the first summer circles appeared on their farm, Mr and Mrs Carson turned a field in to a temporary car park for the thousands of sightseers who flocked to the area. Some of the money they raised was given to worthy causes. Now they no longer welcome the curious on to their land. They do too much damage to cereal crops. "Now it's only people who are studying corn circles," said Mrs Carson. "We've had them from the United States, Germany and even Australia." My husband believes, like me, that it's a genuine phenomenon. We have discovered it happens all over the world. "It's upsetting because we lose crops because of it. But it's not frightening."
