A CROP Circle in the shape of a Celtic knot which appeared in fields near Barbury Castle has attracted interest across the world.

Graphic artist Maria Blackmore, 42, of Lydiard Millicent, was enjoying a family picnic at Barbury Castle when she noticed the strange formation in the fields below. 'I find them fascinating,' she said. Mrs Blackmore took photographs of the formation and has sent them via e-mail to friends and family across the Atlantic.

'I have a cousin and friends in the United States and they were all interested to see it,' she said. Mrs Blackmore said she was impressed by the design of formations on such a large scale. The Barbury Castle formation is about 230ft in diameter with a pattern of interlocking crescents within a huge circle. Mrs Blackmore said she did not have any theories about how the crop circles appeared but just enjoyed the spectacle.

'I don't know how anyone could do it overnight or in a short space of time without being seen,' she said. Crop circle enthusiast Dave Nixon, of Covingham has been out to investigate the latest circle. 'It is a wonderful formation in such a lovely setting,' he said. 'The swept corn is all in a clockwise direction.' Mr Nixon said the formation was the latest of nearly 90 which have appeared in Britain this year, most of which have been in Wiltshire.

The last formations at Barbury Castle were in the shape of a scarab beetle and a Jewish menorah candlestick which appeared in June.

Other crop patterns have also appeared this month at Liddington, Windmill Hill and Hackpen Hill. Full details of the latest crop formations are in the Internet at http://cropcircleconnector.com
