TWO crop circles have been spotted near Swindon.

Experts have hailed the emergence of the circles, on Windmill Hill near Avebury, and near Beckhampton, as a landmark in the study of the phenomenon.

Francine Blake, of the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group, said: "This is a staggering landmark occasion. It is the first time we have ever had three dimensional crop circles."

The two circles, which are 200-250 feet in diameter, both provide an optical illusion. The first, which can be seen 1,000 feet from the main road between Beckhampton and Devizes, has a mixture of angles forming a bisection of triangles resulting in a variety of shapes.

The circle on Windmill Hill is not easily seen close by, lying on the brow of a hill. Shaped like a checkers board, it has large squares in the middle and smaller elongated rectangles at the edge.

Mrs Blake will be sending pictures she has taken from the air to professor Gerald Hawkins, a maths expert at the Boston University of Research in Washington, USA.

"It appears to be a type of projective geometry with shapes pointing in different directions," she added. "You feel as though you would have to touch it to be convinced it is really flat."
