Familiarity and disconnection
One of the most important things you must learn to do in order to have a successful out of body experience is to find a balance between being extremely aware and familiar with your surroundings, and also being able to completely ignore them. This may sound like a contradiction, but of course, in actual fact it is not. The more familiar we are with an object or place, the easier it is to ignore it. The more we are assured of its existence or presence, the easier it is to simply know that it is there. We don’t need to use any of our senses to confirm the presence of an object, if our minds are happy with the idea of it being there, and the unlikeliness of it going away any time soon. A perfect example of this would be your bed, especially if it is a bed you have slept in most nights for the past few years, or even longer. When was the last time you noticed your bed? Or really looked at it, or even really thought about it? When you go to bed at night, do you use your senses to take in your bed, and what it is? The textures, the colours, the smells and other sensations of your bed? The chances are, you probably do not. You have become so familiar with every aspect of this object, even down to the smallest bumps and lumps on the surface of your mattress, that you now completely ignore it, and are simply comfortable with its existence and presence. Buy yourself a new bed, and this level of comfort would be impossible - your senses would crave to take stock of the novelty of the new. Because of exactly this, your bed and your bedroom are generally the perfect place to have an out of body experience. You should know your bedroom well enough to be able to comprehend the space and its contents, even when your eyes are shut. You should also be familiar enough with it to be able to completely ignore it, and imagine that you are anywhere else. These two intertwined practices are essentially to astral projection - a balance of concentration, awareness, and disconnection.
Find the right space
In order to attempt the displaced awareness projection method, you need to be absolutely familiar with your surroundings. As such, your bedroom and your bed are the best places to do this in, but don’t try and do it if you have recently moved house, or if you have recently rearranged your space. You need to be comfortable that you can close your eyes, and be able to clearly visualise your surroundings without any difficulty. If you can do this, and can visualise yourself moving around your bedroom and off of your bed, you are already half way there to having a full out of body experience.
The displaced awareness projection method
Firstly, close your eyes and practice your favourite and most reliable relaxation technique. Edge yourself closer and closer to a trance state, but keep your mind alert and focused on the task at hand. Do your best to visualise your entire room at once, feel where the walls are, where your floor ends and where your possessions are kept. Know exactly where the light is, where the darker places are, where your bed ends and begins. Whilst you are doing this, concentrate on releasing your astral body from your material one. Move yourself through the pre-projection symptoms and pay them no attention - your entire concentration should be to exit your physical body and explore the familiarity of your bedroom with your astral one. Once you are comfortably in a trance state, begin concentrating on the sensation of rotating yourself around. Use the lightness and weightlessness you should already be feeling to lift your astral body a couple of inches, and spin it 180 degrees in a smooth, slow and purposeful action, until your astral head is situated at your physical feet, and your astral feet are floating around where your material head is resting. You should be able to fairly easily visualise where you are in the room, how your room looks from this angle, and how you appear to be on your bed. Slowly sharpen this visualisation, and hold yourself in this position for several minutes, until your trance is deep, and you feel the astral body more strongly than the physical one. From this moment, you should find it quite easy to lift your astral body up and out of your physical one, and free yourself completely in your new position.
