During the last few years of investigating UFOs I have received two calls which were very similar to this story covered in the Daily Mail. Although the newspapers angle is really about wasting police time, it is important to note how people can easily misidentify very familiar objects in our night sky. The vast majority of sightings reported to UFO groups, Internet pages and the like will turn out to be something ordinary - perhaps an aircraft seen from an unfamiliar angle, under usual lighting conditions, a star, a lantern or a planet. The sheer volume of these reports does indicate an increased awareness within the public sphere of ‘strange’ things in our skies, but on the negative side, they are in danger of either overwhelming UFO investigators or enforcing the myth that ALL UFO sightings are explainable.
The story also highlights the pointless action of reporting UFOs to the police who are not trained to deal with this type of report. In my personal dealings of two cases in which the police were involved, their conclusions as to the source of the anomalies reported were very wrong indeed.
Links to the story are below, but remember we are all capable of seeing a UFO even if it turns out to be something very ordinary indeed.
