With hundreds of UFO reports carried out during my time running Swindon UFO Research I am all too familiar with the infamous ‘Orange ball’ sightings. These almost always turn out to be lanterns, although thankfully that trend has declined massively since the reporting desks of UFO groups across the UK where swamped a few years back.
A story in the Scarborough today caught my eye as it is very easy to categorise any orange ball UFO sighting as a lantern. One of the best cases carried out by Swindon UFO Research in which a glowing orange ball was seen hovering over public festivals in the town on several occasions did not turn out to be lanterns. The police suspected search lights, but in the end it was something rather mundane.
I eventually caught the ‘UFO’ on video.
The sighting reported in the Scarborough today quotes the witness as saying:
“All of a sudden there was an orange orb in the sky moving from west to east.”
She described the orb as being similar to an aeroplane in its movement and speed. The difference, she said, was in its shape and colour.
“Aeroplanes usually don’t have a bright orange glow to them. They also usually leave a trail of smoke, which this didn’t have.”
Well, I’m not that sure what type of aircraft they have over Scarborough, but here in Swindon they don’t usually leave a trail of smoke behind them!
The full story is below and is complete with Witness Misindentification, bad advice and a cracking one-liner from Russ Kellet at the end:
Best wishes, Chris!
However, one resident in the village had a very close encounter on Saturday evening.
Lynn Debruyn, 62, lives in the main street in the village. She was in her garden at around 8pm when she noticed an unusual orange glow in the night sky.
She said: “It wasn’t quite dark yet, and I was just looking around for owls and house martins in the garden.
To her amazement, a second orb then appeared, moving in exactly the same way. She watched them both for several moments before they disappeared behind a cloud.
One possible suggestion was that the UFO was in fact aircraft from nearby RAF Fylingdales.
However Squadron Leader Ralph Dinsley dismissed the possibility, saying: “Unfortunately, without more information, we don’t know of anything in the area at that time that could explain the sighting.”
Scarborough UFO expert Russ Kellett offered a further logical explanation for the sighting, saying. “The fact that it was bright, glowing orange would indicate it’s a Chinese lantern, which sadly make up most of all reported sightings these days.”
However, Mrs Debruyn is adamant that they were not lanterns, and that until proved otherwise, she will “be watching the sky a lot more now.”
Mr Dinsley stated that if anybody does spot anything unexplainable in the sky, the best thing to do is contact the police.
However, Mr Kellett believes contacting the police in the case of a sighting would be “pointless”, stating: “You will know the real deal if you see it, as there’s a chance they will take you.”
