Reports have included sightings of adult cats carrying cubs in their mouths and it is believed their numbers are increasing year by year. They are rarely photographed and shun human contact, but are thought to live off wild rabbits, deer, ducks and geese. Experts suggest several reasons for the increased number of large cat sightings in the English countryside. Up to 1976, when the Dangerous Wild Animals Act was introduced, there was no law governing the use of exotic cats as pets, or indeed on their release into the wild. The introduction of the Act means owners now have to purchase expensive licences for keeping such animals, which could have resulted in a number of owners releasing their cats into the wild. The closure of private zoos after World War II could also be a contributory factor, as could an increased trade in illegal exotic hunting. In this section, Weird Wiltshire presents some recent and we will be adding more as the mysterious beasts are reported.
