THE Ridgeway is thought to be Britain's oldest road and follows the ancient chalk ridge route used by prehistoric man.

The road is 137 kilometres (85 miles) long and is still well used by horse-riders, walkers and bikers alike to travel through areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Travelling along the sections of the Ridgeway that remain will take you past nearly every site of significance in Wiltshire.

You will pass: Uffington White Horse and Wayland Smithy in Oxfordshire; Avebury Stone Circle and Silbury Hill; near to Barbury Castle ; Liddington Castle and also Hackpen Hill.
