THE history of Staverton, near Trowbridge, may have to be rewritten after, not only Roman artefacts, but items dating back to the Iron Age were unearthed in a dig at Blacklands in 2002. Sam Inder, of Cotswold Archaeologist Trust, said: 'We have cut several exploratory trenches across this field and made some interesting finds." Archaeologists dug several trenches, six feet wide and of varying lengths, to make their exploratory excavations. They dug through several levels of soil to find part of a drainage system which it is thought dates back to Roman times. They also found a post hole from that date along with pottery. But, in an incredible double whammy, items dating back to the Iron Age were found in a second trench. |
