First Published March 2 1978 HOLY blazes ... a phantom has put the shivers up the men in the hot seat Ghostly goings-on have sent fire heroes cold with fright. Mysterious footprints have appeared on newly polished floors in Swindon fire station. Doors have been opened and shut, lights switched on and off - all for no apparent reason. And now it's rumoured the men's dormitory and canteen are haunted, and some won't go in there alone. Said junior officer Alan Carter: 'I noticed something strange when I first started at Swindon 14 years ago. 'Too many things have happened for there to be nothing to it.' Fireman Carter, who's been working at Stratton for the past two years, was one of several men who noticed the bare footprints. He said: 'Years ago we used to polish the floor ourselves and one particular morning we noticed footprints going along the passage for about five yards and then stopping... 'Another evening myself and two others were looking out of the window on the top floor when three doors opened but nobody was there. 'Being heroes we all ran downstairs.!' Another time a fireman followed someone into the toilets .. but found them empty. Fireman John Payne took over a bed because his colleague refused to sleep there after seeing a shadowy figure at the foot of it. And fireman Danny Gray was the only fireman who dared have his picture taken on the bed. He said: 'I've heard footsteps upstairs but I haven't seen anything.' No one knows who the ghost is. But it may be that of a woman who drowned years ago in the old canal which used to flow where the fire station now stands. Back to 1978 index |
