Like the Red Lion, Avebury Manor has a handful of ghostly visitors. A Royalist, believed to have been an early owner of the manor, is said to haunt the Cavalier Room. Sir John Stawell killed himself after he lost all his possessions during the Civil War and his arrival is always preceded by a strong smell of roses. Another ghost spotted at the house is known as the White Lady. She is the ghost of a young girl who threw herself out of an upstairs window, after her Cavalier lover was killed in the Civil War. She has been seen following visitors through the grounds. |
