GHOSTS rumoured to be haunting Devizes Castle are among the most tortured in Wiltshire, according the the official Devizes Castle website. 
Young Isabella of Valois was married off to King Richard II of England at
only nine years old. Conducting an affair with a young suitor, she was found out by royal officials and bricked up alive in a castle wall. Isabella's spirit has been seen pacing the corridors in the spot were she suffered her unimaginable death. A castle resident has also heard the voices of two soldiers - believed to be from among 100 soldiers garrisoned at the castle during the Second World War. The two men were kept apart because of their tendency to sleep talk. |
